The Starbucks Effect: Blogging Language

Do you remember your first time ordering at a Starbucks Coffee? The language of ordering a coffee seemed foreign to me - "Tall extra whip non-fat mocha caramel mocha," or " was that a grande or venti - or perhaps no whip but extra shot and iced..." These terms changed the world of ordering a basic cup of coffee. I felt the same anxiety after looking at the words Mobs, Moblogs, MoSoSo, Vlogs, SMS, RSS, MSM. Wow, I never knew there were so many words that related to blogs. I quickly went through each word and dissected its meaning and soon started to feel familiar with the overall word usage. However, I often wonder how many people know the meaning of these words and how long it will take the general public to feel comfortable using them in a daily conversation. In Starbucks case, I believe it took a little while before Saturday Night Live started incorporating their coffee language into their funny skits. By incorporating the coffee language into the skits it grew public attention - it also doesn't hurt that there is a Starbucks on every street corner. But for blogs, where they are located in the deep internet highway and not as visible to the general public, I think it is going to take a much longer time for the average person to understand blogging language and its usefulness.

What do you think? Will a MoSoSo and Vlogs and RSS become words in everyday conversations such as those of Starbuck drinkers?

Absolutely! It will just take some time before these words become a part of our everyday usage. But I do want to point out that MoSoSo is not really something related to blogs. It really has to do with your phone.

I agree with Kathie, I certainly think those words will become just as integrated as "email", "texting", and "WiFi" have in our society. It seems like every year there is new technological verbage being assimilated into our vocabularies, much like the term, "The Starbucks Effect"!

I absolutely agree as well. Blogging is the way of the future and soon will be incorporated into our everyday vernacular. Even my mother who could barely turn on a computer two years ago is now surfing the net and has her own favorite blogs that she is always checking out.

Just today I signed onto AIM and the AOL opening page featured a new blogging component it is offering for AIM users, calling blogging a whole new world. In fact, AIM is another example of "The Starbucks Effect." Afterall, ten years ago we might now have been able to easily decipher what LOL, BRB, TTYL, and other AIM lingo meant. Today we do not even question it.

I still refuse to order anything other than a "small", "medium", or "large" "coffee" at Starbucks. That language is creepy.

I could not agree with everyone more! I think it is funny the words they add every few years to the dictionary and it is only a matter of time before these words are next. Do you remember when "texting" became a common term or even "iming"? I can't wait to see the other crazy terms the Internet creates next!

I've just found your blog about coffee machines whilst I was looking for more information to add to my blog about coffee machines. You've got a great blog going here. It's always good to have more information about coffee machines. I've just started my own blog about coffee machines if you would like to take a look.
Keep up the good work.
